Biography

Nelson Ramirez de Arellano Conde started his career as an artist in 1993 with an ecological approach as member of the artist group “ArteNativa,” that was a collective focused on social and ecological themes in Havana. At the same time he created the duo “Liudmila & Nelson,” a cutting-edge photography based artistic team in collaboration with Cuban artist Liudmila Velasco (b. Moscow, Russia, 1969). Ramirez de Arellano led the ArteNativa group for three years until 1999. Liudmila and Nelson´s most important pursuit in their artistic career was to have represented Cuba at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013.

In addition to his career as an artist, Nelson was the Chief Curator of the Cuban National Center for Photography (Fototeca de Cuba) from 2000 to 2010, and its Director from 2010 to 2020. Presently, he is the Director of the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center and the Havana Biennial. Ramirez de Arellano also created the Havana Month of Photograghy Festival “Noviembre Fotografico” in 2006 that holds more than 60 exhibitions in different venues in Havana every year. He won the National Curatorial Award in 2006 for the exhibition “The City and Photography: Havana 1900-2005” that he organized for the IX Havana Biennial.

Ramirez de Arellano is also Co-founder and Curator at Fábrica de Arte Cubano — the most successful and popular cultural project in Cuba, recently nominated by Time Magazine amongst the 100 must see places in the world.
