Biography

Rodolfo Gonzalez, popularly known as “Rudy,” is a photojournalist with over 30 years of experience. Rudy is now an independent photographer who prefers to work with the Leica M System Rangefinder, specializing in documentary, portraits, travel, and sports photography.

Rudy was a member of the Rocky Mountain News photography staff that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. He has also won a National Headliner Award, a Texas Headliner Award, the Barbara Jordan Media Award, and numerous Texas Associated Press Managing Editors awards amongst others. From 2000-2016, Rudy was on staff at the Austin American-Statesman, a daily newspaper of Austin, the capital city of Texas.

In the domain of sports photography, Rudy has covered major events such as the Athens Olympics in 2004, the Tour de France, NFL Super Bowls, and multiple NCAA National Championships. Rudy’s coverage for the Austin American Statesman of Jacqueline Saburido Garcia (Chasing Hope), who became the face of campaigns against drunk driving, has received widespread acclaim. Rudy started visiting Cuba in 2015 and over his numerous visits, Cuba has developed into an ongoing personal project. In addition, Rudy has focused on immigration at the US- Mexico border.

Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Rudy studied journalism, photography, and mass communication at San Antonio College. He is on faculty as Lecturer in Practice at Texas State University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
